Journey with Olds | September 2012
Those who were able to attend the 2012 National Meet were treated to an outstanding experience at the Iowa Event Center in Des Moines, Iowa. We all thank the dedicated members of the Oldsmobile Club of Iowa for their efforts. The indoor venue provided a showcase of special vehicles including Joe Mondello’s 1903 Curved Dash Runabout and the Hurst Hairy Olds.
Show cars were placed in two indoor halls that are approximately the size of two football fields. Modified and Race Cars were placed on a carpeted level above the main show field. Having show cars inside was certainly appreciated by participants (especially judges) as the outdoor temperatures during the National Meet exceeded 100 degrees every day.
There were two Swap Meet areas – one outside and one inside. This year’s vendors included many of the regulars but also included a number of vendors that were selling items that were not car-related – but each reported brisk sales.
In addition to the Oldsmobile owners, there were more than 1,500 visitors who paid admission to see the show. This National Meet provided a pleasant venue for spending time with Oldsmobile enthusiasts, renewing old friendships, meeting new people, and sharing experiences. To complement the show, there was a racing program on Friday night at Eddyville Raceway Park.
2013 National Event
While members of the Oldsmobile Club of Iowa are settling back into their normal lives and getting some well-deserved rest, the members of the Illinois Valley Oldsmobile Club and Archway Oldsmobile Club are preparing to serve as your hosts for the 2013 National Meet on Route 66 in Springfield, Illinois.
Detailed information about the 2013 National Event will be provided in future issues of Journey With Olds. For those who are planning to attend, the dates are July 23 to 27, 2013. The host hotels are on adjoining properties next to the show field – reservations can be made now at the Crowne Plaza Springfield ($99 per night; group block code: OCA; telephone: 800-227-6963) or the Holiday Inn Express ($89 per night; group block code: CAR; telephone: 800-465-4329).
Please notify a representative of either host chapter or me if you have an interest in taking a tour of Route 66 either to or from the 2013 National Event. That highway runs from Grant Park in Chicago to Santa Monica, California.
Future National Events
In 2014, the OCA National Event will be hosted by the Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Chapter in Cincinnati, Ohio. The event will likely include a tour of the U. S. Air Force Museum in Dayton, Ohio.
In 2015, the National Event will be in Marlborough, Massachusetts which is approximately 35 miles west of Boston. Tours associated with the event are likely to include the Freedom Trail in Boston and the Old Plimouth Plantation in Plymouth.
Oldsmar Spring Driving Tour
This year, there is a group of members in Florida who are trying to organize a driving tour in conjunction with Oldsmar Days during the fourth week of March 2013. Preliminary plans are for the tour to include The Ringling Museum in Sarasota, the Tampa Bay Auto Museum, and some restaurants and wineries enroute. If you are interested in participating, contact Leo Stutzman at 813-624-7387 or firstname.lastname@example.org or Sky Borst at SVBNH@aol.com.
The Gathering – A Reminder
