2020 National Meet
Share |

The Oldsmobile Club of America was established in 1970, so in 2020, the OCA will celebrate its 50th Anniversary.

We will host our 2020 National Meet from July 28 to August 2 in Murfreesboro, Tennessee – which is near Nashville.  The event will include tours of Nashville, the Grand Ole Opry, car collections, an auto assembly plant, drag racing, and a large number of

Oldsmobiles on the show field.

There are many things to do and see in Murfreesboro

For history buffs, there is the Stones River National Battlefield and National Cemetery, three miles northwest of Murfreesboro. It is a 650 acre national park and the site of the Stones River Civil War battle that took place on December 31, 1862. The museum includes regimental files, Civil War and Stones River battle artifacts and a research library. Today, more than 6,100 Union soldiers are buried in Stones River National Cemetery. Of these, 2,562 are unknown. Nearly 1,000 veterans, and some family members, who served in the century since the Civil War are also interred there.

If you have children, there is the Discovery Center. It is a children's museum, and nature center. Another interesting place to visit is The Earth Experience: Middle Tennessee Museum of Natural History. The Nashville Zoo is a popular destination for families, as is the Nashville Science Center. If you have children with special needs you may want to check out The Miracle Field. The Miracle Field features a custom designed rubberized baseball field, as well as a playground and even an easy to ride zip line.

For the shoppers, there are many places to visit. The Avenue, right next door to our host hotel in Murfreesboro, features an open air retail and dining venue and The Stones River Mall, just four miles from our host hotel, has many chain stores to choose from. There are several antique stores in the area as well.

Murfreesboro is only 34 miles from downtown Nashville and is easily accessible via I-24. Nashville is famous for being the home of country music. Some points of interests include The Grand Ole Opry, The Country Music Hall of Fame and The Ryman Auditorium. The Grand Ole Opry is a country music radio show that has been airing weekly since the 1920s. The Country Music Hall of Fame is dedicated to preserving the history of country music. The Ryman Auditorium, often referred to as the Mother Church of Country Music, and was the location of The Grand Ole Opry from the 1940s through the 1970s. You will find the Ryman located in historic downtown Nashville and it is within walking distance of the Ernest Tubb Record Shop (celebrating over 73 years and open 24 hours a day!) and many other sites that make up downtown Nashville.

Some historical homes of interest in Nashville include: The Hermitage, the home of Andrew Jackson from 1804, until his death there in 1845; the Belle Meade Plantation and the Parthenon, the centerpiece of Centennial Park with a replica of the Parthenon in Athens, Greece.

Don’t forget the food! While you are here, try the Nashville Hot Chicken, a type of fried chicken that is a local specialty. In its typical preparation, it has been marinated in a water-based blend of seasoning, floured, fried, and finally covered in a paste or sauce that has been spiced with cayenne pepper. It is served atop slices of white bread, with pickle chips. There are many restaurants in Nashville that serve a variant of the dish (you can choose to try it out at our Awards Banquet) and there is a citywide festival and competition celebrating it. Make sure to visit Tootsies Orchid Lounge. Famous early customers were Kris Kristofferson, Faron Young, Willie Nelson, Tom T. Hall, Hank Cochran, Mel Tillis, Roger Miller, Webb Pierce, Waylon Jennings, Patsy Cline and many more. Movies filmed at Tootsie’s include “W.W. & the Dixie Dance Kings” starring Bert Reynolds, “Coal Miner’s Daughter” about Loretta Lynn and starring Sissy Spacek, and “The Nashville Rebel” starring Tex Ritter, Porter Wagoner, Faron Young, Loretta Lynn, The Wilburn Brothers, and Waylon Jennings.
