President’s Message
Journey with Olds | September 2014

Thank you Greater Cincinnati – Northern Kentucky Oldsmobile Club!

The Greater Cincinnati – Northern Kentucky Oldsmobile Club commenced planning for the 2014 Oldsmobile Club of America National Meet approximately three years ago.  They worked with the Holiday Inn Hotel Cincinnati Eastgate to arrange for an excellent experience for everyone who attended the event.  Comments from participants during and after the event have been very positive.

New Editor

Please join me in extending a welcome to Shannon Olson, the new Editor of Journey With Olds.  Shannon is new to the Oldsmobile Club of America but has extensive experience with editor duties and responsibilities with other car clubs.  She attended the 2014 National Meet in Cincinnati where she was introduced to the Board of Directors during their annual meeting and also to members at the General Membership meeting.  Shannon is looking for articles and stories and has expressed an interest in learning more about the members of the Oldsmobile Club of America.  We encourage you to submit personal interest and technical articles for inclusion in JWO.

New Board of Directors

The Oldsmobile Club of America Board of Directors has nine new Zone Directors and a new Treasurer.  During the Board meeting and the General Membership meeting in Cincinnati, there was a common theme of communication, contact, and responsiveness with members of the club and each other.  We are looking forward to the next four years.

During the Board meeting, the Directors approved a change in the Bylaws that will change the duration of term for all Board members from the current four years to two years.  We expect that will increase the number of members who are willing to volunteer to serve the Oldsmobile Club of America.

We encourage you to contact members of the Board to let them know what you are thinking – and thank them for taking on the duties and responsibilities of the OCA.

New Chief Judge

The OCA has a new Chief Judge – Mike Pruitt.  Mike was introduced to members at the General Membership Meeting in Cincinnati and at the Awards Banquet.  In the Talk to the Judge column, he has provided a brief introduction that includes information about his Oldsmobile experience, his family, and his focus on building on the tradition of the OCA judging program.

New Advertising Manager

The Board approved the selection of Melissa Perry Adams to serve as Advertising Manager.  In that newly created position, Melissa will be working with advertisers and prospective advertisers in Journey With Olds and the OCA Website to increase the exposure of companies that produce parts and services that are important to the maintenance of members’ Oldsmobiles.

Website Improvements

The Board approved Phase II of the OCA website design project.  During the next year, OCA members will see changes including a “Members Only” section, improvements in the online membership registration process, automation of classified advertising submissions, access to electronic versions of past copies of Journey With Olds, a technical database, and expanded capabilities available for use by the Chief Judge and Long-Term Membership Committee.

Contributions to the R. E. Olds Transportation Museum

The Board of Directors has increased the annual contribution to the R. E. Olds Transportation Museum from $1,000 to $2,400.  In addition, the Board has established a committee to review the current financial situation at the Museum and will investigate possible future increases in annual support.

30-Year Member Spouse Jackets

Jackets are exclusively available for spouses of 30-year members.  The jackets are red with an OCA logo on the back.  Jackets may be personalized with a name embroidered on the front.  Two versions are available – light lining and heavier lining.  The cost is $105 including shipping.  Please send an e-mail to me if you are interested.  We will order them when we have ten or more requests.

The Gathering – A Reminder

Each year, the Dixie Oldsmobile Club hosts a regional show that includes a car cruise in the evening on Friday, October 10 and an all-Oldsmobile Show on Saturday, October 11.  In past years, participants have come from adjoining states, New England, and the Midwest to participate.  Proceeds from the event will be donated to the R. E. Olds Transportation Museum in Lansing, Michigan.  Details are available on the OCA and Dixie Olds Club websites.

2015 National Event

Information about the 2015 National Event will be provided in future issues of Journey With Olds and on the OCA website.  For those who are planning to attend, the dates are July 21 to July 26, 2015.  The host hotel, Sheraton Milwaukee Brookfield Hotel in Brookfield, Wisconsin, is taking reservations now:

  • call (262) 364-1100, then
  • press “2” for reservations, then
  • mention “Oldsmobile Club of America Room Block” to obtain the $99.00 group rate.

Best wishes for safe travel.
