President’s Message
Journey with Olds | September 2013

The Illinois Valley Oldsmobile Club and the Archway Oldsmobile Club have worked together for about three years to plan and host the 2013 Oldsmobile Club of America National Meet at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Springfield, Illinois. Comments from participants during and after the event have been very positive. The weather cooperated though judging and then we had an evening of rain. While the only event that was impacted by the weather was racing at Central Illinois Dragway in Havana, Illinois, most of the cars included in the race car class had an opportunity to make one pass on the drag strip.Approximately 400 Oldsmobiles were registered for the event and about 250 were judged. In addition, there were approximately 75 swap meet vendors. The daily high temperatures in the mid-70s made for a very pleasant event for all participants.

The host chapters took advantage of the inside area by offering swap meet space to those vendors who preferred an indoor location and provided display space for several special interest Oldsmobiles. Special indoor attractions included two Hurst/Oldsmobiles, a 1972 and a 1969 convertible which had been designed with a ten-foot shifter mounted on the deck. One of the celebrities who often attended events with the 1969 convertible was Linda Vaughn. Ms. Vaughn was in the indoor show area greeting event participants on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday morning.

The 2013 National Meet provided opportunities to spend time with Oldsmobile enthusiasts, renew old friendships, share stories, and meet new people.

2014 National Event

Members of the Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Oldsmobile Club are preparing to host the 2014 National Meet.

Detailed information about the 2014 National Event will be provided in future issues of Journey With Olds and on the OCA website. For those who are planning to attend, the dates are July 29 to August 3, 2014. The host hotel will be the Holiday Inn Hotel Cincinnati Eastgate. Reservations can be made now.

2015 National Event

In April, the OCA Nationals Meet Site Selection Committee was established to identify locations for future national meets. Their first assignment was to identify a location for a National Event in 2015. After evaluating 19 possible cities, the Committee selected Brookfield, Wisconsin. The host hotel will be the Sheraton Milwaukee Brookfield Hotel. Dates for the event will be July 21 to July 26, 2015.

Website Improvements

During the next month, members of the OCA Website Committee will be preparing a presentation for the Board to consider substantial changes to the website. The proposed changes will include a members only section, improvements in the online membership registration process, automation of classified advertising submissions, access to electronic versions of past copies of Journey With Olds, a technical database, and expanded capabilities for use by the Chief Judge and Long-Term Membership Committee.

Compliance

The annual compliance process will be changed substantially effective in 2014. The Board has eliminated the 85% membership compliance requirement. Concurrently, the Board is considering additional value opportunities for OCA memberships. Our goals are to simplify the chapter monitoring process, reduce the amount of administrative time required by chapters, increase the value of the OCA membership, and improve relations between the OCA and the chapters.

Contributions to the R. E. Olds Transportation Museum

The Board of Directors has increased the annual contribution to the R. E. Olds Transportation Museum from $500 per year to $1,000 per year. Members of the Board have been impressed by the changes that have taken place in the past year and are pleased with the plans for the future.

30-Year Member Spouse Jackets

This is a reminder that jackets are available for spouses of 30-year members. Each jacket is red with an OCA logo on the back. Jackets may be personalized with a name embroidered on the front of the jacket. Versions available include one with a light lining and one with a heavier lining for colder climates.

If you are interested in purchasing one of these jackets, the cost is $105 including shipping. Please send an e-mail to me if you are interested.

The Gathering – A Reminder

This annual event will be hosted by the Dixie Olds Club. The event will include a car cruise on the evening of Friday, October 4 and an all-Oldsmobile Show on Saturday, October 5. Proceeds from the event will go to the R. E. Olds Transportation Museum. Details are available on the OCA and Dixie Olds Club websites.

Best wishes for safe travel.
